When I started carnivore I was REALLY excited about getting off all my supplements – thyroid, iron, b12, DHEA, maca root, St. John’s Wart, creatine, collagen just to name a few.
The good news is, I’m still off all those supplements.

What I didn’t take into account however was the mass quantity of oxalates from my old diet. I’m not special. Or bulletproof. And no matter how hard I Vegan’ed, perfect will always rob from the good.
Last week I had a major sciatic flare – the area of my body where chronic pain likes to scream. I was having trouble sleeping, my eyes burned, I felt tired, my patience was low and I thought – well shit, are we destined for the ER again? So much for those good intentions, Katie.
Rather than spiral down a path of shame, I consulted with god, prayed and asked for clarity. The next day a subscriber from my wee YouTube channel commented on a video I made and suggested that my symptoms sounded like the all-too-common oxalate detox and once I listened to 1-2 fellow carnivores (doctors included) the clarity was served on a silver platter – years upon years of almonds, spinach, sweet potato have all come back to haunt my ass, literally.
Alas, no problem exists without a solution!
I rushed (aka, limped) to Foodland and grabbed some local lemons and my husband grabbed some calcium and I resolved to facilitate my body in flushing these crystals from my joints so I can continue this incredible journey of healing.
Save this protocol:
- lemon for citric acid, electrolytes and iodine
- calcium citrate, magnesium glycinate, d3 and potassium
The suggested protocol: calcium, magnesium, potassium, a sugar free electrolyte, tons of water & patience. I’ve added D3 (which is a hormone not a vitamin) & iodine for good measure. D3 is excellent for immunity & mental health, iodine is essential for proper thyroid function.
What did I do to sooth the sciatic flare:
– 90 minute deep tissue massage
– hot/cold therapy
– slow walking
– 1/2 lemon in electrolytes in the morning + iodine
– 1000 mg calcium citrate, 100 mg potassium & 200 mg magnesium glycinate = 2 x a day (morning and evening before bed)
– eat meat and animal fat + well salted

Am I wary of carnivore now? F no.
It makes me pissed for all the years I subscribed to the ploy: eat more plants. Being mad doesn’t get me anywhere tho so I plan to proceed with gratitude & joy.
Cheers to the continuum,
Katie
UPDATE: 5 days post flare and I am 100% better. I went for a brief jog this morning and I’m stretching all parts of my body without pain.

continues to be my favorite most satisfying meal. Blue Ribeye – thanks hubby.
